International School of Cape Town in Somerset West
The International School of Cape Town is a non-profit educational Foundation, which is owned, organized and administered by a Governing Body. It opened its first school in Rondebosch, directly across the road from the official residence of the State President, in January 1998 with 86 students. Twelve months later it has three schools and 240 students. Such is the phenomenal growth of the School that the International School of Cape Town has been invited by the Somerset Park Business Trust to establish the International School of Cape Town in Somerset West.
The Foundation is responsible for the School's philosophy, ethos, curriculum, personnel, financial control and standards and has the vision to promote and establish schools as, and where, required within the Western Cape. Local management of the School in Somerset West will rest with a Management Committee made up of parents and representatives of the community.
The unique blend of the School's philosophy of internationalism; the ethos of Christian love and care which underpins its discipline and relationships; the internationally respected and recognized broad and balanced curriculum based on the UK National Curriculum and leading to University of Cambridge IGCSE and A level certification has proved to be a recipe attractive to both citizens and overseas visitors alike.
The school is set on a 20 acre site and will have a full complement of sports pitches, sports hall, theatre and chapel. It is anticipated that the School will have 900 students in the three shools by 2004. Along with churches, clinics, a shopping mall and recreational facilities, the School will form a focus for community development in this millennium project.
The School will accommodate sixty students per year group starting with Nursery School at age 3 years up to Grade 13, the A level year. Whilst effecting an educational continuum, the School will be subdivided into Junior Primary (up to Key Stage 1, Grade 2); Senior Primary (up to Key Stage 2, Grade 6 ) and Secondary School, (up to A level Grade 13).
Phase 1 of the building project, which will be the junior Primary School, is underway and meetings for the prospective Parents are taking place.
